Emily G. Weigel, Ph.D. (she/her) is a Senior Academic Professional in the School of Biological Sciences at the Georgia Institute of Technology, where she integrates ecology, quantitative reasoning, and evidence-based pedagogy to create authentic, community-engaged learning experiences in biology. A Georgia Tech alumna originally from Atlanta, she earned dual doctorates in Zoology and in Ecology, Evolutionary Biology, and Behavior from Michigan State University, where her research explored how social environments shape reproductive behavior and decision-making in animals. She later returned to Atlanta as an NSF Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CURE) Postdoctoral Fellow at Spelman College, studying horizontal gene transfer across diverse organisms.
At Georgia Tech, Weigel teaches courses spanning introductory biology through upper-level ecology, behavior, and experimental design, while mentoring undergraduate researchers and training future faculty through the Tech-to-Teaching Program. Her traditional ecology research centers animal behavior, and her education research examines how student backgrounds, values, and responses to instructional strategies influence learning and performance in biology. A nationally recognized educator and recipient of numerous institute- and national-level teaching awards, Weigel also serves as the Director of Assessment in Biological Sciences, contributes to institutional teaching and assessment initiatives, and supports the broader biology education community through curriculum development, faculty mentoring, and editorial service to improve science and science education for all.
When not researching, teaching, or advising, Weigel enjoys playing soccer, surfing Netflix, and promoting STEM in the community.
