Emily Weigel, Ph.D. (she/her) is currently a Senior Academic Professional in the School of Biological Sciences at the Georgia Institute of Technology, in Atlanta, Georgia.

Originally from Atlanta, Weigel also earned her biology undergraduate degree at Georgia Tech. She then ventured to Michigan State University to complete dual doctorates in Zoology and in Ecology, Evolutionary Biology, and Behavior. Her dissertation research focused on how social environments influence female choice, male courtship behavior, and reproductive investments made by both sexes.

Following graduate school, Weigel returned to Atlanta to become an NSF Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CURE) Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Biology at Spelman College. There, her research focused on horizontal gene transfer among organisms with similar ecologies but different evolutionary histories.

Now at Georgia Tech, Weigel remains affiliated with the BEACON Center for the Study of Evolution in Action and conducts research alongside her several departmental instructional and advising duties. Also a data-driven instructor, Weigel’s education research asks how and why student educational background, values, and responses to teaching techniques affect performance in biology.

When not researching, teaching, or advising, Weigel enjoys playing soccer, surfing Netflix, and promoting STEM in the community.
